Future of Play 2040

Strategic foresight & material innovation for inclusive play futures for a Global toy manufacturer
The Strategic Gap
As play becomes increasingly digital and solitary, we risk losing the physical, embodied connection that is crucial for development. Our challenge for a leading global toy manufacturer was to look 20 years ahead:
How might we design play systems that are radically inclusive, moving beyond simple 'accessibility' to create shared experiences where disability is not a deficit, but a driver for creative innovation?
The Body as Site
Using Horizon Scanning, we identified a potential shift towards 'Bio-Integrated Design.' We explored a speculative scenario called 'Wearable Architectures', imagining a future where play systems are modular and adaptive to different physical abilities. This phase focused on investigating hypothetical material properties such as adaptive textures and bio-responsive surfaces that could turn play into a connective tissue between generations.
A Strategic Roadmap
The project culminated in a 2040 Strategic Roadmap that provided the client with actionable 'North Star' visions. We delivered a series of material provocations and user personas that help the brand navigate the shift from static construction toys to dynamic, sensory experiences, ensuring their long-term relevance in an inclusive world.
